The official description by the American Association of Music Therapy is:
Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional,
cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages. Music therapy improves the quality of life for
persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses. Music therapy
interventions can be designed to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance
memory, improve communication, and promote physical rehabilitation.
Our goal in the clinical music therapy program is to provide an arena for your child that facilitates
an appropriate developmental place, emotionally, physically and psychologically, to integrate symbolic
play in to everyday functioning through various music therapy techniques. We offer a supportive and nurturing
enviornment. The clinical music therapy program offers your child a forum where they can simply "be." Struggles
are symbolically worked with in song, musical puppetry play, and a highly interactive safe, music- making environment.
We tailor and sculpt an individualized program, depending on the specific needs of your child, which
involves a process and existentially oriented approach. This is of extreme importance in providing a
facilitating environment for your child to grow. Thus, he or she is given an opportunity to explore
his/her own meaning of life, how he/she communicates with him/herself and the world, through musical
expression and play. To express through another mechanism other than verbalizing that comes out coherent
and one that makes sense to the child. It is a musical landscape to express and be heard, and understood.
The therapist is able to assist the child in finding ways to cope with stressors, from physical,
psychological, emotional, and environmental.
The child is given a place to have control, where situations may seem uncontrollable. Emotions are
given expression, for example, hyperactivity has a context and place, aggression is channeled, depression
is given voice, and physical disabilities vanish. Where the inter-subjective experience is valued, and
becomes integral in the child's intra and inter-personal development. Inner strengths are built upon, and
new skills blossom.
It is a clinical program, collaboration with parents/guardians, any interdisciplinary services is
encouraged. Client information is valued as strictly confidential.
