Mission Statement

The Hoboken School of Music seeks to provide the finest musical education
possible to the community from a worldly and sophisticated perspective in a
pleasant and nurturing environment.


Courses and Descriptions

The Hoboken School of Music provides individual and group instructions in all orchestral instruments
as a fundamental music learning experience. In order to nurture one’s music learning experience, we
also offer other musicianship classes such as ear training/theory and music appreciation. To promote
one’s self-awareness and interpersonal skill, we offer ensemble classes to further one’s musical and
personal growth. At the end of semester, students are encouraged to participate in our celebration concert.

Please note: Course schedules are set for our regularly occuring classes. If there is enough interest
in a class at another time, we will try and schedule it. Private lessons are scheduled according to
student and teacher availability.

Private Lessons for 5 and up & Adults of All Ages

Private Lessons are aim to provide individualized program to tailor the needs of each students
in piano,voice, guitar, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, composition, ear-training,
music theory and music appreciation. At the end of semester, students are encouraged to
participate in our bi-annual student achievement concert at Jersey City Museum.

NEW--"Theater Program"

Attention, Actors and Actresses! Learn the audition process inside out and master your next audition! Audition Coaching sessions (both private or group) are designed to explore all areas of audition process including resume, confidence, breathing, repertoire selection, executing monologues and songs. It will guide you through the preparation process and express yourself successfully in the audition. All ages.

ACTion for Kids
Come and explore the world of theater with creative movement! Theater games, character development, and movement exercises, improvisation and scene work will get your creative juices flowing and nurture your childŐs imagination! Students will learn everything about the stage and rehearsing; the class concludes with a live performance. 6 to 13 years old.

Monologue Study
Strengthen your approach to tackling monologues. Whether for performance, auditions, or growth as an actor and speaker, this class will build up your confidence in executing monologues. Each student will leave with at least two contrasting and effective monologues. Ages 10 & up.

Shakespeare!
ShakespeareŐs way of writing can be intimidating. Learn how to work with his material as an actor by looking at his life, his words, and his works. Activities include scene work, monologue work, and improvisation with Shakespeare. Leave the class with a mastered classical monologue. 13 & up.

*NEW* Musical PlayDate
Ready for some fun with for your child(ren) with friends while exploring music and their talent? Why not set up your childŐs next playdate with musical instruments where they can develop friendship and exploring sounds of music. One teacher facilitate and introduce music to all participates. Please have 3-6 children and possible times when you book.


Pre-School Music Program (ages from 2-4)

These are group classes design to promote children’s group skill and yet small enough (6 per class)
for each child to receive his/her own individual attention from the teacher. These classes provide
fun and hands-on instrument experiences that covers basic concepts of music include rhythm, melody,
beat, dynamics, and harmony. Under the guidance of special trained teachers, students naturally sing
and/or improvise with the teacher in both pre-composed songs or create their own new songs.

Suzuki Violin

While we believe in the importance of reading music as soon as a child is able (around age 5);
we also offer Suzuki method in violin for children who are ready to jump start on violin lessons
with help of their parent at 3 years old.

Childhood Program (ages from 5-11)

Introduction to Music and Instruments (ages 5 and up) Thursday 4:00-4:45 pm
This group class will expose children to the knowledge of music through active participation.
They will learn the fundamentals of music (melody, rhythm, harmony ect…) through activities
in reading and notating music. They will also learn to express themselves playing varies
musical instruments. Children are expose to the idea of discipline through fun.

Musicianship and Performance I (ages 6 and up) Thursday 5:00-5:45 pm
This group class will further explore children to the knowledge of music by playing on keyboard and
recorder. The class is designed to provide the necessary knowledge and skills for children to enjoy
music for the lifetime. In addition to learning the fundamentals of music, they will also explore varies
musical instruments and all genres of music styles from classical era (composers, symphonies, operas)
to the mondern (jazz, broadway, world music) period.

Children’s Chorus (ages 4 and up) Sunday 2:00-2:45 pm
Children will learn to explore their voices and express themselves through singing music in a
group setting. They will develop strong ear training and sight singing skills as they learn to sing in
tune together. Students will also learn basic singing and breathing technique in addition to following
the conductor. It is a fun way for children to participate in a real music-making arena.

Instrumental Private Instruction
It is the building block of one’s music education. Student meets once a week with
our highly trained teacher to focus on the technical and musical aspect of his/her instrument.

Instrumental Partner Instruction
Some children might benefit more from taking a partner lesson together with
someone such as siblings or parents to focus on their music skill together.

Instrumental Group Instruction
This class is designed for student who wishes to learn the technique of an
instrument while performing with other children. The class will promote student’s
self-motivation and confidence. Suzuki method is used to help children excel early in music.

Young Adult Program (ages from 11-17)

Young adult’s program reinforces their academic learning experiences and
strengthens their critical thinking skills using music while building a higher self-confidence

Private Instruction
It is the building block of one’s music education. Student meets once a week with our
highly trained teacher to focus on the technical and musical aspect of his/her instrument.

Partner Instruction
Some children might benefit more from taking a partner lesson together with
someone such as siblings or friends to sharpen their music skill together.

Ear Training and Music Appreciation
This is an integral music course that is design to meet every aspect of music learning.
It focuses essential elements in developing a keen musicianship. Students will learn perfecting pitch,
rhythm, melody and harmony through activities that strengthens their aural skills. They will also learn
the music literature and core musical knowledge combined with the western history. Students will
learn the theoretical tools and basic vocabulary to analyze music literature from varies styles
and genres thus discovering his/her own unique interpretation to music.

Song Writing
An creative process for students to express and explore the voice of their own with
musical knowledge to enhancing one’s self-awareness and self-esteem. Semester End concert
will allow their composition to be heard either performed by school students or the composer him/her self.

Instrumental Chamber Music
Students will get the opportunities to work with fellow music students in different instruments.
This class will accept pre-formed groups or individuals who are looking to be placed. They will
learn inter/intrapersonal skills through being actively involved in music making.
Semester End Performance.

Chorus
Students get the opportunities to express themselves in singing with fellow music students.
They will develop strong ear training and sight singing skills as they learn to sing in harmony together.
Students will also learn singing and breathing technique in addition to standard rehearsal practices.
It is a fun way to participate in a real music-making arena. Semester End Performance.

Adult Program

The Adult program concentrates on their appreciation and love of music thus providing
an effective tool for self-expression and inner satisfaction. 

Private Instruction

Music Appreciation
This class is designed for students who love music and would like to explore more and
deepen their knowledge in music. The class covers composer’s lives and literatures in the
western music history, which will sharpen student’s overall comprehension to enjoy music from
both aesthetic and therapeutic aspect. 

Song Writing
An creative process for students to express and explore the voice of their own with musical
knowledge to enhancing one’s self-awareness and self-esteem. Semester End concert will
allow their composition to be heard either performed by school students or the composer
him/her self.

Chorus
This class is for everyone who likes to sing and bond through music!
